More Radiohead Remixes

As I mentioned on the radio show last week, Radiohead have done the do-with-it-what-you-will thing again, this time with the already flawless Reckoner. If you're unfamiliar with the process, it simply involves Radiohead posting the 'elements' of a song onto the www.radioheadremix.com website, where DJs download and rearrange them as they see fit.

The results are interesting to say the least; an afternoon on the website threw up italo, dubstep, techno and electronica efforts posted by over a thousand DJs, ranging from anonymous bedroom folk to the almighty James Holden.

My favourite thus far is this one by Dubliner My Wooly Hat.

Palin 2012

"If that will allow some curiosity seekers, perhaps, to have one more thing that they can either check the box off that they can find something to criticise, perhaps, or find something to rest them assured over."
Sarah Palin - Resting you assured over since '08.
Latest news is that she's pulled a Djalminha, setting off in a rampant fit of I'm-bigger-than-the-team-ism as she worryingly fixes her eyes on ruining the world once and for all in 2012.

Gaiser - 'Whether Or Not'

For me, the stand out track from Magda's Electronic Beats Radio Mix. I happily discovered the identity of the track on first listen to Blank Fade.

http://www.myspace.com/jongaiser

Quote from his myspace page: "My 'bedroom' has always been a room full of gear that happened to have a bed in the corner."

P.S. 'Whether Or Not' beat two other gems from Blank Fade, 'Trunkated' & 'Face Down', by the tightest of margins to be today's BSITW. They are definitely worth checking out(as is the entire album).

Album Playlist - 25/10/2008

Format:B - Steam Circuit (Highgrade)
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. The groove flowing through is just incredible. This is club-orientated electronica built on minimal foundations with a heavy impact that never runs out of, eh, steam.

Flying Lotus - Los Angelus (Warp)
Influenced by jazz, electronic and Brazilian sounds this collection of ambient tracks is cited by Sasha to be one of his main influences in compiling his recent Involver compilation. The atmospherics and off-beat percussion echo Burial's highly regarded output Untrue.

Gaiser - Blank Fade (M_nus)
Not due for release until November 17th, Gaiser's eagerly awaited debut is, as promised; "a soundtrack to some hidden nocturnal habitat, full of weird and wonderful creatures that stalk the darkness." The newest addition to the M_nus crew, he joins Hawtin on the line-up for the label showcase in Dublin's Tripod next month.

Matter - London

Matter is a new club designed and operated by Fabric at the Millennium Dome or 02 Dome, as some people would like it now to be known. The club itself has many separate rooms and is primarily concerned with larger scale events. Accessible by tube, bus and boat: there is a nightly return service by boat back into town each night the venue is open. Early reports have been very positive, the sound is said to be pristine and "has to be heard to be believed". The open-plan layout, size and state-of-the-art design make Matter an exciting addition the London music scene. Bedrock held it's 10th anniversary party here on the 10th of Oct with progressive don John Digweed headlining. Despite the capacity (2500) crowd, those in attendance reported a memorable and comfortable night. The BodyDynamic dance floor vibrates with the music for a true full body experience.

James Murphy and Pat Mahoney bring the DFA machine to Matter tonight, Oct 24.

Justice headline the mainroom on Saturday, Oct 25.

Live - M_nus 10th Birthday, SEOne

Richie Hawtin, the man credited with coming up with the whole concept of minimal techno during his Platikman days, has built a veritable empire in the form of his M_nus record label. The empire is celebrating its tenth birthday with a series of gigs aroung the world revolving around the Contakt theme. Ed has already blogged about this concept, but essentially it involves a cube that feeds off the energy of the crowd and I'm not really sure what's meant to happen after that. It is all a bit pretentious and not really in keeping with what these kind of things should be about, which is the music. Thankfully, M_nus cannot be attacked too much, for despite all the peripheral fluff, the music has been blazing a trail for years and is still in full flow. There has been much talk of the demise of minimal techno of late, with its gradual replacement by something a bit deeper and a bit more soulful. While I agree that a lot of generic minimal techno has come out as it has become the "in" format of electronic music these last few years, I feel that rumours of its death have been greatly exaggerated, to paraphrase Mr. Twain. Ed has already pointed out in the comments of another post that if the "in" crowd move on to something else, that does not mean that the cream will not remain and keep churning out real high-quality stuff. If the crowd at SEOne at London Bridge was anything to go by last Saturday night, it would certainly seem to be the case that minimal techno is far from dead.
First off, I have read a lot of bad press about this gig. People have argued that the venue was poorly chosen, and that it should have been in Fabric. I will admit that SEOne, while quite cool in ways, was a bit soulless, too big, way too packed, and the sound was very poor. I suppose M_nus would argue that it was the only venue that could cater to such phenomenal demand, with hours long queues before the gig. If you want an intimate gig, don't go to the 10th birthday extravaganza of a massive record label, you moaning c**ts. As for the Cube, I didn't even see it to be honest. Not a clue where it was. Just a fad as far as I'm concerned. As for the music, however, anybody that complains can just piss off. Gaiser got things going early on, and after a delay, Hawtin, Magda, Marc Houle, Troy Pierce, and possibly Heartthrob all played on stage together messing on different bits of equipment. The place erupted. They all played a set on their own afterwards, and the quality on tunes, if not the sound, was through the roof. Glitches, clicks and kicks were the order of the day, coupled with bit treble-heavy build-ups and massive bass-laden kick-ins and euphoric roaring and leaping from the crowd. It was classic stuff, but just what you would expect from a M_nus gig.
All this could of course have been achieved without the Cube or the fuss, but it will still go down as one of my gigs of the year.

Here's a video of Troy Pierce playing a particularly tasty one:

BTBW October 13th retrieved

Good news and bad news. We managed to get back our radio show from the Monday before last. So here it is:
BTBW 13.10.08.
The playlist is accessible here

The bad news is that this Monday's show has now been lost!!! Anyone that listened live will recall a girl coming on after us and saying she couldn't wait to go home and then playing f**king MGMT. Well, she managed to screw something up so it wasn't saved onto the hard drive of the station computer. Bint. So BTBW 13.10.08 is reincarnated, but BTBW 20.10.08 no longer exists. All this uncertainty just means everyone should listen live all the time!!

Friendly Fires - Friendly Fires

The debut self-titled album from Friendly Fires has really surprised me. At first, I wasn't too keen, but it slowly got the better of me and is currently a daily fixture in my music world. It reminds of Foals with a synthy/disco element à la Hercules & Love Affair and MGMT. I was interested to see that the Hertfordshire group consider German label Kompakt, techno pioneer Carl Craig and Prince to be among their greatest influences.
The influence of electronic music is everywhere on this album. The sound is fresh but also feels distinctly familiar. Stand-out track 'Jump In The Pool' is feel-good funk, layered but not choking and with a very airy feeling througout.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable, catchy pop album that does not take itself too seriously. It is an easy listen with a dance groove to keep the listener involved.

Friendly Fires - 'Jump In The Pool'

As far as I can see there are no up-coming Irish dates schuduled but that is likely to change soon. Friendly Fires are currently on tour with Lykke Li in the U.S. and will tour Europe with Foals starting mid-November.

The brilliant Jape recently toured the U.K. with the St. Alban lads and the track below has been circulating as a result. Well worth a listen.

LowerState Presents Rone[Live] @ DeBurgho's, 24/10/2008

Next up to entertain the LowerState masses will be the exciting Rone. The Parisian has been building quite a following with his experimental brand of techno/melodic ambient electronica and is a fitting guest to mark LowerState's impressive first year of existence. With a new album on the way and his productions appearing on high profile compilations(Agoria's At the Controls), this is another top-notch booking by the LowerState crew.
We've enjoyed many quality nights in DeBurgho's and look forward to many more over the coming years. It really is a testament to Rory and Pete when you gaze back over the last year and look at some of the names that they have tempted to the west: Chymera, Donnacha Costello, Format:B, Sian, Fairmont, Yapacc, Pantha du Prince and Daso. In addition to the great names the venue is always looking good and, importantly, the sound has never failed to impress. I have no doubt there is something special to come when they announce the guest for the upcoming Christmas party(19 Dec).

Support on the night comes from Audiofeen, who will be kicking things off at 10.30/Doors:E10.

Finely Tuned and Resident Advisor have finally released the venue for Luciano's debut Sydney appearance. Greg Wilson has also recently been added to the bill. Both guests will play a 4 hour set. LIVE: Duke Special vs The Divine Comedy

A very novel gig takes place in Vicar Street next Tuesday 14th October. Modern darling of the Irish songwriting scene Duke Special and Neil Hannon of the Divine Comedy come together for a sort of head-to-head battle. Now, this type of event is something usually reserved for hip-hop, but the thought of these two masters, each behind a grand piano, engaging in an evening of one-upmanship and bravado is hugely enticing. To add to it all, the event is taking place as part of Amnesty International 'Small Places Tour', so we can all flex that warm western philanthropic halo around our heads as we enjoy what should be a great evening's entertainment.
Here's some more info on the Small Places Tour

The Small Places Tour is named in honour of human rights pioneer Eleanor Roosevelt, who spoke of human rights mattering "in small places close to home." This is a "tour" with a difference. Amnesty International will be running the Small Places Tour, its most ambitious global music and human rights project since the Human Rights Now! Tour in 1988. The ‘Small Places Tour’ kicks off globally on September 10th 2008 and runs through December 10th 2008, artists around the world will perform live concerts in support of Amnesty International bringing the world a message of Human Rights through music.

Halfset

Irish 4-piece instrumental electronica outfit Halfset have just released a fresh album recently, Another Way of Being There, which is their sophomore album after 2005's Dramanolog. The album is a joyous offering of epic, wavy, emotive soundscapes of tracks like Work, Adrift and Salmon, with slightly catchier tracks such as Prairie and Desire Lines. This album reinforces the view out there that Ireland is becoming a haven for ethereal, ambient electronic music, something we would have associated in the past with foreign lands and the likes of Ulrich Schnauss, Boards of Canada, Mogwai, Air et al. This is no longer the case, as it is right here on our doorstep in the form of bands such as (that I can think of right now at least) Halfset, Chequerboard, Holy Roman Army and in a slightly different direction acts such as Si Schroeder.

Halfset play 20th October in the Academy with Holy Fuck, 22nd October* in Whelan's and 24th of October at the Hat's Off Party. I don't know where or what the Hat's Off Party is but if anyone does, could they please let me know.

You can watch 4 of the videos from a live 2FM session here. I nicked this off the State website, which is actually really good.:

You can listen to an MP3 stream of the album here

DEAF: Totally Wired

As part of the DEAF Talks daytime event, the Irish premiere of Totally Wired, a documentary by Niamh Ahern, will take place in the Digital Hub on Saturday 25th Oct. Totally Wired is a film about Schneider's Buero, which is an electronics shop in Berlin. We have been reliably informed of its legendary status as "the" place to buy the equipment needed to make electronic music in Berlin, which pretty much makes it the most important shop of its kind on earth. The documentary features artists such as Magda, Marc Houle and Ricardo Villalobos and will be followed by a Q&A with the owner Andreas Schneider. This should be a very worthwhile little event. The DEAF Talks in Digital Hub run from 10am to 6pm on Sat 25th October, and the detailed running times for each show are as yet unconfirmed. Watch this space for details nearer the event.

Early Bird EP Tickets on Sale Friday

Milosh & Chequerboard tour Ireland

We are delighted to see that Canadian Mike Milosh returns to Ireland soon to play a series of gigs around the country. It is great to see that Milosh, who played a 50-person gig in Sligo and a gig in Clonakilty on a previous tour, is staying loyal to the smaller venues around the country, in marked contrast to the vast majority of foreign acts who come to Ireland, rarely leaving the capital, and if so usually for Cork or Galway. Milosh released his third album, III, this year, so we can expect to hear plenty of that new release along with a spattering of gems from his previous on-the-way-to-being-classics Meme and You Make Me Feel. We make one track of III, Awful Game, available to download below. What makes this tour even more special is that Milosh will be supported throughout by John Lambert, aka Chequerboard, an Irish electronica-instrumental artist whose album Penny Black, released this year, is, to quote the Irish Times, "as delicate, detailed and purposeful as a Japanese garden". I can not think of a more perfect Irish artist to support Milosh, and am looking forward to attending at least one of these gigs immensely.

Here is the list of dates and venues for the tour

Oct 21 De Burgo's, Galway
Oct 22 Whelan's Upstairs
Oct 23 Spirit Store, Dundalk
Oct 24 Triskel Arts Centre, Cork
Oct 25 The Brogue Inn, Tralee
Oct 27 Belltable, Limerick

Noel Gallagher Interview - The Irish Times 03/10/2008

Noel Gallagher recently spoke, in his trademark opinionated and open style, with Brian Boyd of The Irish Times. I have never been a big Oasis fan, even in the early days when the world was going mad about Definitely Maybe and What's The Story..., I was just never that interested by them. Nor did I harbour much love for the Gallagher brothers themselves. However, after reading this interview, I have to say that my respect for him grew.

Extracts from the interview published in The Irish Times on the 3rd of October follow:

ON BEING ATTACKED ONSTAGE: "I WAS ABSOLUTELY SHITTING MYSELF"

"The guy had been backstage where it had been raining. He than hit me from behind and I fell onto the monitor. I immediately felt a really sharp pain in my back, where the ribs had cracked. Then I looked down at my leg and he had left wet footprints on me. I though it was blood. I was absolutely shitting myself.

"Up until that point, everything had been going great. Paul Weller had just been on before us, and we had a monumental piss-up planned with him for later that night. Next thing I know, I'm in hospital. Where were security? The two of them were sidestage playing air guitar, that's where security were! This was a festival show, so we didn't have our own security. Obviously, now we have to rethink our security situation, but we don't want to get like Madonna and travel around with 400 people.

"And guess what I found out later? The guy who attacked me is Irish! He's 47 and I think he had just got Canadian citizenship. I haven't said this to anyone before because I don't want to be dragging the name of the Irish nation down all around the world."

ON EXCESS: "WE HAD ALL THE COCAINE IN THE WORLD"

"When you have all the time in the world and all the money in the world - which we did when we went to record our third album after two phenomenally successful albums - it's probably not a good thing. I should mention, of course, that we also had all the cocaine in the world. I still tell people that the Be Here Now album is the best advertisement against taking cocaine. It goes on too long, it's smothered by its self of self-importance - the same as coke users are. When I was writing these 11-minute epics, I kept waiting for someone in the studio to turn to me and say 'I think that's a bit long,' but no one ever did. We were the biggest band in the world at the time and no one would speak up."

ON BROTHERHOOD: "I STILL BLAME LIAM FOR THE FACT THAT WE NEVER CRACKED THE US"

"I've only sung lead vocals when Liam hasn't bothered to turn up for a tour - and I still blame him for the fact that we've never cracked the US. When we had one of the biggest selling albums in the world, and were about to begin a crucial US tour, he arrived at the airport, gave some ludicrous excuse when he couldn't get on the plane, and left us completely stranded."

ON OTHER MUSICIANS: "I LIKE RADIOHEAD . . . UNTIL THOM YORKE STARTS SINGING"

"I've never ever felt the need to do anything outside Oasis. The band is enough for me. This is not meant as an insult, but you look at Damon Albarn and if he's not writing an opera, he's doing this or that. I don't need all that. I have a life. I'm not a careerist. I really hate these bands who always seem to be saying, 'now, on the new album we've worked really hard to get out of our comfort zone'. Fuck that. I spent 18 years building my comfort zone and I'm not going to leave it. And then bands such as Radiohead and their 'artistic progression' . . . Christ. I like Radiohead - until Thom Yorke starts singing.

ON CLASS: "I COULD NEVER BE LIKE PETE DOHERTY AND GO OUT WITH DIRT UNDER MY FINGERNAILS"

"The happiest time of my life will always be when I was eating at a Brunch bar - do you remember those? - in Charlestown in Co Mayo. Brunch bars and Silvermints will always have a special place in my heart because you could only get them in Ireland. We used to spend six weeks every year in Charlestown. It was magnificent. We were coming from a council estate in Manchester - and we lived at the end of cul-de-sac - to these 360-degree panoramic views. We loved it as kids. We could go fishing in the river or help with bringing in the hay.

"One of my earliest-ever memories is of going to the well by the house in Charlestown to get the water, because we had no running water there when I was a child. I still go back at least once a year, and even just the smell of the place immediately brings me back to those happy, happy childhood days.

"I still have a very strong sense of identity, a sense of being a working-class son of Irish parents. That's why I could never be like Pete Doherty and go out with dirt under my fingernails, a top hat on and my shirt hanging out. Working-class people take pride in their appearance. They'd never go out looking like that.

"One of the worst things that ever happened to me was when I said that thing about Blur [in an interview in 1995, Gallagher said he hoped Damon Albarn and Alex James would "get Aids", which he later retracted and apologised for]. My mam rang me up when she saw that and she was really angry and she said to me 'I didn't bring you up to talk like that,' and that stung me so much.

"Despite all that has happened - those massive selling albums, those huge gigs at Knebworth, being called 'the saviours of British music' - I've retained my identity. Even at the very height of our success, I never thought I was any better than the next person.

"In fact, the opposite is probably the case. I'm still sitting here waiting for my luck to run out."

Dig Out Your Soul was released on the 3rd of October.

SPEAK YOUR BRAINS: Comrade Yorke

We knew that something was in the air, what with global capitalism collapsing last week, bankers calling for government intervention and the nationalisation of investment banks the world over. Never too far behind the prevailing societal trends*, some of the foremost musicians on earth have pulled together to form their own Trade Union, which they have named The Featured Artists' Coalition. Not to be confused with the The Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, this Coalition, with similarly noble aims, will create a forum whereby musicians can stand up for their rights. The Coalition will even have a six point "Manifesto", and be headed by a "Chairman". The Coalition felt the need for its existence magnify in recent years due to the onslaught of first Napster and then any number of downloading, streaming, and essentially, nicking engines. They cite even MySpace as a genuine threat to their well-being. Their primary aim will be to give young bands a governing voice "that will support them and help protect their work", according to Damon "Scargill" Gough of Badly Drawn Boy, who has just returned from the Yorkshire Coal Fields after a long hard fight with Thatcher's minions in blue. The Coalition will be headed by Karl, I mean Thom Yorke, Trotsky Williams, everyone's favourite DJ Stakhanov Oakenfold, local workers' council action group "The Verve", and Craig "Solidarity" David.

The first line of the Coalition Manifesto reads as follows:
"A spectre is haunting Europe... The spectre of the Coalition. All the powers of the Europe have entered into a holy alliance to exorcise this spectre: Napster, Rapidshare, BitTorrent, TorrentSpy, MegaUpload, MySpace, Facebook, Gay Byrne, Beyond the Big Wave, Dustin the Turkey, and worst of all, Batt O'Keefe and Martin Cullen"

Expect to hear much more from this force for good in the world as capitalism crumbles all around us and the Coalition brings into a fairer, better era for humanity.

*remember Live Aid? And then Live Earth? Well, after caring about poor people, and caring about the environment, it seems the new "in" thing is to act like a Trotskyite

David Byrne coming to the National Concert Hall

Musical genius David Byrne comes to Dublin in April of next year as part of a tour entitled "The songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno". So we can assume that he will be playing some songs that he wrote with Brian Eno. More precisely they will probably come from the new album the pair recently released entitled "Everything That Happens Will Happen Today". This is the second time they have collaborated, and the first time they have co-written what Byrne refers to as "proper songs", after the 1981 experimental offering My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. Along with these direct compositional collaborations, Eno has also produced three Talking Heads albums, the band which underlay Byrne's skyrocketing to stardom, and from which his voice should be familiar to all but the deaf. Beyond their work together, the "avant-funk"* sound they helped pioneer, their fusion of musical styles, along with the fronting style of Byrne, are still wielding a heavy influence in music the world over, from the likes of LCD Soundsystem, to Arcade Fire, to Vampire Weekend. And probably any other band I could have randomly thrown in there.
Byrne plays a sit-down gig in the National Concert Hall on Earlsfort Terrace on a seemigly distant April 6th 2009, which is nearly as far away as the next Electric Picnic, but I suppose tickets are out for that too.
This is essential viewing for anybody who appreciates the artistic influence these two men have had on modern music

Here is the video for the first single off the album, Strange Overtones

RA Podcast 120 - Steffi

You are going to hear the name Steffi a lot in future. The Panorama Bar resident has served up one of the best podcasts/mixes in quite a while, it's as deep and moody as you are likely to find. Known for her trademark deep-inclined sets in the famous Berlin music spot, Steffi choose the tracks on this podcast from some of her favourite records over the past few months specifically alluding to their "raw vibe" as the reason for their inclusion. Describing the sound that she currently enjoys as being neo-Detroit or neo-Chicago, there is no doubt that the tracks included here contain the same quality and soul as we have come to expect from the classic Detroit/Chicago sound.

Along with recent Galway visitor and fellow Panorama Bar resident, Prosumer, Steffi has launched a new club night called '5€ Admission!' at Berghain/Kantine. Designed to allow a chance to go deeper and more intimate than a banging club vibe, it certainly will be another unmissable clubnight in Berlin.

Bodytonic present The Twisted Pepper

Second Bodytonic post in as many days. It can only be a testament to the Dublin collective's hard work and tireless output. Known to many as the crew who run Electric Picnic's dance arena and the buckie serving Bernard Shaw pub in Portobello. The lads are currently coming close to fulfilling a long term goal of running their own club venue. Located on Middle Abbey St., in the space formally known as Traffic, Bodytonic have been hard at work giving the northside venue a face lift over the past while. Twisted Pepper, as the new club will be known, is planned to have 3/4 distinct floors of music on any one night. The downstairs area opened on Thursday and first reports are extremely positive. Kitted out with a Funktion-one system and a reloacted dj booth, the re-jig will further improve an otherwise great venue. The upstairs area is due to open in 2/3 weeks.

Acts due to perform at The Twisted Pepper over the next few months include:

BEARDYMAN, BENGA, BILL BREWSTER, THE BUG feat. WARRIOR QUEEN, CARL CRAIG(29 NOV), CHRIS INP, EQUINOX, FABIO, FAKE BLOOD, FISH GO DEEP, GROOVERIDER, JAZZANOVA, JOKERS OF THE SCENE, MARTELO, MEAT KATIE, SICK GIRLS, SWITCH, THEO PARRISH, TITTSWORTH, TODDLA T, TRUSME & many more TBA

I would highly recommend heading along on the 8th of November when Fish Go Deep will preside over the official opening. The night also coincides with Stereotonic's 5th birthday so expect big things. Many more acts to be added to the line-up over the coming weeks.

Go on Bodytonic!

Bodytonic Podcast 022: Chymera

Bodytonic bring us the latest in their podcast series featuring Cork's Chymera. This is a lesson in melodic techno. Chymera, who played at LowerState's first party almost a year ago, is gaining a huge following worldwide. Now based in Barcelona, his productions have featured on a number of high profile releases recently. Of particular note is the inclusion of 'Arabesque' as Luciano's closing track on Fabric 41.
