Matias Aguayo - Ay Ay Ay
Matias Aguayo released one of 2009's more unconventional albums in Ay Ay Ay. Formed mostly around the human voice in varying chants, percussive samples and languages, it is a departure from the standard techno flavour of Kompakt's output over the past number of years. Aguayo himself has moved away from the minimal sound that forged his reputation, he is one half of Closer Musik (with Dirk Leyers). I don't feel that Ay Ay Ay represents a new dawn for all things around the 120bpm mark but it is something different to wrap your ears around. The lead track 'Menta Latte' can annoy and delight in equal measures with its numerous layered vocals. First single 'Rollerskate' is a worth a whirl and will have your head moving before you know it. My favourite track has to be the sinister sounding 'Ay Shit - The Master'.Ay Ay Ay was released on 26 October 2009 on Kompakt records. Buy here.

Picnic Preview: Luciano presents Æther
Before I launch in the musical side of things it may be of interest to you that Aether originally was the personification of the "upper sky", space and heaven, in Greek mythology. Now you know.“DO YOU HEAR COLOUR”

So what can we expect from Luciano's Æther Live project? A little research reveals that the Chilean DJ/producer will be taking on the role of conductor leading Cadenza musicians Reboot, Lee Van Dowski, Mirko Loko, the Digitaline duo and Swiss drummer, Omri Hason, into a multi-media performance which eventually ends in one big live jam. The visual effects have been created by the London live video designers and performers Microchunk. Described as a complex mixture of music, video and light intended to thoroughly disturb our idea of music, Luciano explains: "Æther is a live concert based on technology and the senses. The idea is to finally make people understand what it is to make electronic music".

"The show is both conceptual and ground breaking. The evolving narrative of the visuals will represent colour theories in 4 movements. Visual content will span diverse subjects to accentuate the way light is used to interpret the sounds. This is a rehearsed disciplined show to exacting technical standards and pushes the limits of software and hardware for both the audio and visual elements."

Ben Klock - FACT mix 31
Ben Klock is atop my list of must-sees this year. I haven't had the pleasure yet and, along with Marcel Dettmann, I hope to catch both at Airbound. That is if I still have money to my name come the summer. The link below is to an exclusive mix compiled for FACT magazine. There are some great tracks included from the upper echelons of techno hierarchy such as Regis, The Mole, Surgeon, Omar-S and Shed. There's also an interview with Klock, where he mentiones Dublin as one his favourite cities to rock alongside Rio and Sao Paolo...not bad eh.

Marcel Dettmann - Podcast, Mix & Video
The boys at Bodytonic have served up another quality podcast, this month from Marcel Dettmann. Famed for his residency at Berlin's Berghain, Dettmann has been credited with influencing much of the shift to the deeper sound prevalent in electronica at the moment. His Berghain 02 mix released on the Berghain's own Ostgut Ton label was noted by Resident Advisor's Chris Hobson as being the defining moment when techno made that shift and began to evolve.Download Podcast (right click & save as)
The folks at Djsounds.com have posted a recent interview with Herr Dettmann and features some exclusive footage of the hallowed Berlin club's interior.

It is nearly impossible to get cameras into Berghain/Panorama Bar, as they have a strict no-camera policy, reported DJsounds’ German division. So kudos to the crew for managing to come up with this clip: an interview with Berghain resident DJ Marcel Dettmann and a rare peak inside Berlin’s uber-cool techno club!
Stalwart of the Berghain sound, select selector Marcel has been spinning at the venue (formerly known as Ostgut) since 1999.
Here he talks about DJing, the Berghain/Panorama Bar combo, and Berghain 02, his debut mix compilation, which was released earlier this year on Ostgut Ton, Berghain’s label arm.
Production-wise, Marcel has previously released material on his own Marcel Dettmann Records imprint and remixed for the likes of Rekids, and in this interview he chats openly about his recent production work, including ‘Plain’ on Berlin label Beatstreet.
