Nosaj Thing - Fog.

I can't get over this track. Dineen has been championing this chap lately, the album "Drift" is one of the finest I've heard this yea, varying from the beatifully airy to the downright grimy. A exemplar to all those searching for the outer realms of the Pretty-Philthy spectrum.

Fresh Air, on the air

Donal Dineen's radio show takes on a fresh visage for November, with the invitation of a host of Irish artists to come on, have a bit of a chat, play a few tunes. It is basically like they call over to him for a cuppa tea but we get to listen in. Should be only lovely.

A reminder that the Small Hours airs Monday-Thursday, midnight-2am.

FreshAir is a free music festival that will be transmitted directly into your ears via The Small Hours on Today FM. Donal Dineen has chosen his pick of the best new irish sound makers to take part in a month-long celebration of great new music, live on your radio.

For the month of November Donal will have a invited guest act live on air for The Small Hours to play live, chat to Donal and play a selection of their own favourite tunes, effectively curating the show for the night.

Sideproject

Sideproject is a Cork based 5 piece. The band formed in early 2006 and have been producing high-quality experimental/post rock ever since. To date they have released two well received EPs Take Shelter From The Stars and Not Waving But Drowning. Having played on the bill with acts such as Fight Like Apes, Delorentos and, Ted Leo and The Pharmacists, the lads have garnered a deserved loyal following. They also featured as part of the Hard Working Class Heroes festival 2008 alongside the likes of Super Extra Bonus Party and the truly superb Chequerboard. The excellent 'Each Flame Concealed a Sinner' is amongst a number of tracks to sample on their MySpace page. With influences such as Efterklang, Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky, the lads could hardly go wrong. Best of all, I have the absolute pleasure of being a colleague of Alan and Mike. Treat yourself to a listen.

Just came across this live rendition of what many believe to be the late Mic Christopher's masterpiece, What A Curious Notion, filmed at a Vienna club in 2001. Always nice to see an initially uninterested crowd become so gripped by a man and his guitar. Typically for Mic, he forgets the name of the song...

This November marks 8 years since his untimely death in Groningen; he would have been 40 last month.

LCD Soundsystem - 45:33 (Remixes)

It's hard to believe that 45:33 has been with us since 2005. It still sounds as fresh and energising as when it first creeped into our lives. We now have an updated and remixed version released last month after having undergone a 2009 workout (ahem) from some of house and disco's finest. The original track placings have not been altered hugely. Have a listen.

Now in support of his album Julian Plenti...is Skyscraper, Banks is playing selected dates in support of the release including a date at The Academy at beginning of December. Delving into the Parisian hipster scene

Like a duck to water, like a bee to honey, like Pat Kenny to that disputed bit of land. Whichever simile is used, the point is, your correspondent has gone out of his way to get right to the stripy, skinny, cigarette-holding coalface of the Parisian hipster world.
It turns out in a city dominated by either chic OTT clubs more suited to P Diddy, Paris Hilton and their entourages, world-renowned jazz, or a hip hop scene inspired by the enormous African population here, the space occupied by hipsters as we know them is in fact quite small. The hub of this world seems to be Point Ephemere, at Canal St Martin. This delightful little hub is a gig-venue, restaurant, bar, art gallery and outdoor picnic location all rolled into one. In typically classical hipster style, it is located right at "the tracks". Think Williamsburg, Rathmines Bridge (!!), Shoreditch.
Last week your correspondant managed to get down there twice. On Monday J. Tillman, supported by OhBijou, brought the house down. Tillman, who is the drummer from Fleet Foxes, posseses a beautiful bluesy brand of folk music. His live show was full of subtle gems which had the house captivated, with a few barnstorming tracks from his new catalogue, of music, raising the roof at the end. The lovely OhBijou, from Toronto, provided support. They are as endeeringly shy and tender as a child on day one at school, but their combination of violin and xylophone to a traditional four-piece is delightful.

Wednesday then brought us back to the Canal for a gig organised by the Swedish Culture Festival. Two nondescript support acts were followed by Jenny Wilson. Wilson, who has sung with the Knife as well as having a solid solo career to date, played her only gig outside Scandinavia in the next few months, which made it all the more enjoyable. From the moment she came on stage clad in a large rich blue cloak, appearing through a thick fog, it was clear that this woman has star quality. Think a combination of Bjork and Massive Attack. After an incredible start with "The Path", things settled slightly as she filled the gig with many of her older songs, which are slightly more soulful and less experimental. In any case, her show is a treat and she comes highly recommended.

An indication of the quality of the venue is witnessed in the acts to come: Sunset Rubdown (solo act from Wolf Parade), The XX (already sold out) and Yacht all appear in next week and a half.

Modeselektor - RA Podcast 173

Following on from their recent appearance at Electric Picnic as Moderat (the live tour now completed), the Modeselektor boys are back going it alone. Announcing their return to more familiar territory they have compiled a podcast for Resident Advisor in advance of the release of Body Language Vol. 8 on Get Physical. That mix album will no doubt be in their trademark fast and aggressive style encompassing many different genres. Their contribution to the Boogy Bytes series contained thirty-three tracks squeezed into a single mix and they are set to do it all over on their upcoming release. For now, to whet the appetite, we have the latest RA podcast from Belgium's (because I say so) Gernot and Sebastian.
