Not the first time Marcus Lambkin has featured in this category and appears for a deserved second time with new his track. The Dubliner moved to NYC in 1992 and hasn't looked back since(now based in Stuttgart, oh sweet Germany). Signed to DFA by James Murphy, expect big things when his album arrives later this year.

Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim 2009

The Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim will take place this year on Saturday, 18th July 2009.

The swim, renamed in 2008 in memory of swim co-organiser Kevin Thornton's mum who passed away after a long battle with cancer and now in its fourth year, will test 25 swimmers as they put their bodies on the line to cross the seven miles from Aughnish, Co. Clare to Palmers Rock in Salthill, Co. Galway.

Last year it was a dark day with grey rough seas and south westerly winds that had us swimming into the waves that guided us towards the docks and necessitated constant correcting. But that did not stop us!

This year it is the recession which has the potential to drive us back but we won't let it. With your help and support we will add substantially to the approx. €100,000 you helped us raise over the past three years.

Please support this worthwhile and deserving charity - we will do the training if you will back us up!

I managed to catch Buraka Som Sistema at the St. Jerome's festival in Sydney this year and was blown away by their energy, interaction with the crowd and how fun they are. Great to see Dan Deacon involved, always a top-notch performer and it will be my debut experience so particularly excited about that. Temper Trap are destined for big things and by all acounts were of the stand-out acts at SXSW. This is gonna be great! Count-down to Stradbally is officially on.

Foggy Notions have only gone and done it, son. The hippest promoters in Dublin continue to shape the scene with Brooklyn bands Grizzly Bear (finally) and Dirty Projectors playing on November 1st and September 26th respectively. Huge.

Here are two incredible videos; the first is Grizzly Bear performing one of the stand out tunes from their album-of-the-year-territory Veckatimest record. The second is a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the legendary Dark Was The Night compilation CD, followed by a stunning rendition of Dirty Projectors' contribution, sans David Byrne.

Dan Snaith is up to shenanigans

Dan Snaith, the only man I'm aware of to have carried out PhD research while on tour, has a few bits and bobs going on worthy of note. For those unaware, Snaith is the man behind Caribou, the act that gave us such glorious tracks as Melody Day on the 2007 album Andorra, which won the 2008 Polaris music prize. A classically trained pianist as well as a mathematics PhD holder, Snaith operated in a previous musical life as Manitoba, at which time he was also responsible for some acclaimed under-the-radar releases such as Start Breaking my Heart.
Apparently currently working on a new Caribou album, Snaith has also released a remix under the pseudonym Daphni of Cortney Tidwell's new track Watusii. It is, apparently, "a fourteen minute monster, a trippy techno bastard that sneaks up gently, growing relentlessly until it leaves listeners dizzy and euphoric". Can't wait to get my hands on it.

Along with this, a 14-piece band, named Caribou Vibration Ensemble, to play with the Flaming Lips in New York on Sept 13th, and a show at the Opera House in Toronto on Sept 10th.

Caribou Vibration Ensemble features Kieran Hebden (Four Tet, Fridge, Kieran Hebden & Steve Reid), Koushik (Stones Throw Records), John Schmersal (Enon, Brainiac), Kathryn Bint (One Little Plane), Ahmed Gallab (Sinkane), a four piece horn section, choir, four drummers, etc.This sounds incredibly exciting. However, whenever Kieran Hebden gets together with anybody, we get a bit jumpy around here, so we might be a little biased in saying this is the coolest thing ever like.

GIG GUIDE: Ana Gog, Crawdaddy, Sat 13th June

Local five-piece Ana Gog play their biggest venue to date this Saturday in Crawdaddy. With a flute and even a bazooki occasionally appearing, they are a refreshingly unique blend of experimental, jazz, at times celtic music. And yes, that redhead on the keyboard is my brother.

GIG GUIDE: Fleetwood Mac

So, they're not going to the Picnic after all the speculation. However, a night with what remains of Fleetwood Mac on October 24 in the O2 will be ample consolation for those of us obsessed with their near-perfect pop music. Let's not get into the discussion about old guys and pension pay cheques and bask in the news for a moment.

Final Fantasy & Jape, Roisin Dubh, May 28/29th

Sunshine. Volvo Ocean Race. Salthill Five-a-Sides. And an unforgettable gig. Owen Pallett, and the Roisin Dubh, combined to give us one of those nights. The stunning silence during his songs, the thunderous reaction as he finished each one, the four encores; they all reaffirmed in us Dublin-based exiles that the Roisin really is the tits. Special mention must go to Jape, for both his raucous Friday night show and his acoustic support on Saturday. Happy Birthday Roisin Dubh.
