AxisWatch: The lads get together for a boat ride

Our friends in the Axis have been up to their usual tricks this week. This time it was the turn of Russia and Venezuela to show their unity and dedication to the cause. Russian ship Peter the Great set sail from the Russian Northern Fleet's base in Severomorsk. I'm not sure exactly where that is but I'm sure it's cold, grey and nasty there. From there the fleet will travel 15,000 nautical miles to engage in some "manouevres" with the Venezuelan navy. At that point they will all get pissed and laugh at Dimtri's "Bushims" poster that he promised to bring over. This deployment comes at the same time as an announcement that big Hugo is heading off to Moscow for a visit in a few weeks, and increasingly close ties between Russia and Cuba and other Latin American nations have been forged in recent weeks. These events have been linked to the US's reaction to Russia's intervention in Georgia recently. Advice for the US, and particularly for Sarah Palin, in the horrifically possible event that she ends up being leader of the "free" world, is to back the hell away. Hugo and Dmitri said in a joint press conference: "Misunderestimate. That's not even a real word!!! Hahahaa what a dumbass!!!"

Electric City is leaving us!! Tomorrow!!!

It is with deep regret BTBW is alerting you to tomorrow (Thurs) night's Electric City gig in Wax.
This will be last ever EC, a club night that has been bringing the highest quality techno and electronic music to Dublin since it opened in the Metropolitan in 2003. Since then it has changed homes to Traffic on Abbey Street and lately to Wax on South William St. Across these three venues they have treated us to some of the best gigs Dublin has had to offer, including a memorable night in Traffic where Richie Hawtin rammed the main room while Andy Weatherall played upstairs, several intense performances by Dutch wizard Speedy J, Italian Terence Fixmer, Marc Houle, Troy Pierce and of course local hero Donncha Costelloe . They have also held some quality "Electric Shock" nights in the old Temple Bar Music Centre over the years, nights that were never for the faint-hearted which have hosted the likes of DJ Rush, Technasia, Adam Beyer, Chris Liebing and many many more.

The night will leave a gaping hole in the Dublin electronic music scene, and will be sadly missed by all around here. It's been good.

The line up for the last ever EC is as follows
Wax:

Onur Ozer [Vakant - Istanbul]
Giles Armstrong [electricity]

Spy:

Alexander Robotnick [Fuzz Dance - Florence]
Simon Conway [electricity]

Access all areas : Tickets 12 euro + b/fee from Beat Finder and Spindizzy Records. Admission on night e15

Vampire Weekend October 23rd

Standard-bearers for the STUCK (Smart, Trendy University College Kids) generation of indie bands, Vampire Weekend's eponymous debut album must surely be a contender for 2008's album of the year. Combining catchy summery feel-good sounds with catchy smart-ass lyrics, they have been on everyone's lips all summer, with apparently eye-catching shows at both Oxygen and Glastonbury. While it was never hugely in doubt, we are delighted to see that the inevitable winter-gig-after-the-storming-summer has been announced, for the Ambassador on October 23rd. There was no real announcement for this gig, simply an email from MCD saying they were already on sale. Not sure what the motive for that one was, speculation is of course welcome. As far as I can see it is already sold out, which is a bit of a bummer for anyone without a ticket.

BSITWT # 31

Wesley Matsell - Bernwerk (Border Community). Another massive favourite of James Holden's for the last few months, this track got its release on BC this week. Huge.

Shedding the past

Shed is a really cool name*. He also makes really cool music. Out on the Ostgut label, which is heavily associated with the Berghain club in Berlin and also hosts Marcel Dettman, Ben Klock and former BSITWT recipients Prosumer and Murat Tepeli inter alia, his album Shedding the Past is receiving wide blogging attention of late and just got a huge thumbs up from Donal Dineen this evening. The album mostly fits into with the deep deep style on display in other Berghain work and in Ben Klock's set at Electric Picnic, with tracks such as Waved Mind and Ostrich-Mountain-Square bringing the phrase minimal to an almost literal level. My preferred tracks on the album are the dark, evil, floor-filling Another Wedged Chicken and the deeper, searing, 8am vibes of The Lower Upside Down, both of which fall more into the bracket of "tracks that aren't meant for people who are already in a coma". Despite the sometimes excessive minmalism, this is a hugely rewarding album and a must for anyone with an interest in stripped-down electronic music.

You can listen to interrupted versions of the tracks from the album here

Shed plays
Pogo @ (I presume) the Pod November 22nd.

* You could also argue that it's a really shite name

Still dominating my Ipod since their storming Sunday afternoon show at the Picnic, Hercules & Love Affair, accompanied by Anthony Hegarty on this one, make their long-overdue debut in our BSITWT section.

Hercules & Love Affair - Blind

An Taobh Tuathail Volume II - Cian Ó Cíobhain

"Much like the first volume", says compiler Cian Ó Cíobháin, "I decided to go down the quieter laneways of modern music. Therefore, once more it's tunes for the head & heart more than the feet, drawing on electronica, modern folk, a touch of Balearic & tunes influenced by classical music. Ó Cíobháin is encouraging listeners to play the album in it's entirety from start to finish rather than dip in and out of tracks. The way albums are meant to be.

Cian has presented

What the F**k is going on in: The rest of the Caucasus

Here comes the ironic twist!!! There HAD to be an ironic twist. You can't behave the way Vlad has (not that we are condemning it...) and not face a backlash.
After crushing the cheeky murmurings of neighbouring Georgia, Russia may now have to give in to claims of "territorial integrity" from enclaves of its own. Oh the glorious beautiful irony of it all. If only we could go back six months and ask the EU ministers at the Kosovo roundtable if they had any idea what sort of beast they were unleashing....

Tatarstan(in red) is an oil-rich and politically stable province in the Caucasus. Having seen Russia giving it the whole "if Kosovo can have independence then so should Abkazia and South Ossetia", the All-Tatar Civic Centre is now in the corner of the room, giving it all "em, guys, over here...". According to some Tatar guy "Russia has lost the credibility not to recognise us". Maybe he's right. But, my Tatar friend, do you remember what happened in Chechnya??? Big Vlad is no bumbling Georgian cretin-President. This will NOT be like taking candy from a baby. "The candy will not be wrested easily from my hands, quite unlike what one would expect in the case of a baby", Putin was quote as saying yesterday.
According to Wikipedia:
The unofficial Tatarstan motto is: Buldırabız! (We can!). Em, maybe this time lads, ye can't...

Neighbouring Bashkortostan (somewhere near the red dot), is a major hub of the Russian petrochemical industry. They complain that Moscow takes over 80% of the region's riches per year. Well, tough shit little man!! This week they accused Moscow of "double standards" in the Georgia debacle and called on the officials of their region to ask what it is they can do for their people. My advice would be this: keep asking those questions, and expect a nuke in the ass.

Finally for this edition, we have Cherkessia. The people of this region are ethnically related to the Abkhazians, and have been rejoicing in the recent events. But, of course, they now wonder why they can't follow their cousins' footsteps.

So there are real questions to be asked here. Are we on the brink of a return to the Yeltsin-era vision of sovereignty for whoever fancies running their own show ? (this must surely have been how Yeltsin himself got into power, in some sort of twisted Charlie and the Chocolate Factory style nightmare). Alternatively, Putin's only way to avoid one breakaway may be to crush every single one in typical fashion. If one Russian enclave slips away, there will be serious door- knocking at the Kremlin. Watch this space....

Elbow win Mercury Prize

The Mancunian guitar band Elbow last night triumphed over Radiohead, The Last Shadow Puppets and the hotly tipped dubstep artist Burial to win the Mercury Prize. A just recognition after 18 years of releasing critically acclaimed albums that never quiet made it to the mainstream. The announcement of the winning act each year is usually greeted with booing but on this occasion a huge cheer rang out from the industry crowd as they were named as winners. The judges, sometimes criticised for their leftfield choices, continued a recent trend for rewarding indie bands that were already fairly well known and on the cusp of the mainstream. The title is widely accepted to translate into a 500% increase in album sales and a huge publicity boost.

Erlend Oye - Unrest

It was with great joy that I stumbled upon a previously unknown (to me, that is) CD of Erlend Oye, everybody's favourite Norwegian, in a shop in Copenhagen this week. Unrest is an album that Oye, of Whitest Boy Alive and Kings of Convenience fame, recorded in 2001-02. The concept is a simple but a delightful one. Berlin-based Oye spent the year travelling around the world, working with friends and contemporaries, and collaborated on a song with a local artist in ten different cities, from the metropolis of New York to towns such as Uddevalla. His near-perfect voice is there on show in each piece, along with that glorious brand of uplifting oft-electronic-tinged pop to which he has become the standard-bearing accompaniment.
Anyone who bought Dave Clarke's era-defining World Service compilation will be familiar with Mr. Velco Fastener. I have not heard of him since the appearance of Who's Gonna Bend on that album, but he appears here, recording Symptom of Disease with Oye in the Finnish town of Turku.
Upon listening to this album we can see that the sound Oye has made his own, and the electronic influences that are more evident in the Whitest Boy Alive project, were already well in the making by the beginning of the decade. A very enjoyable listen indeed.

Luciano: Pulse Radio Launch Party @ Secret Location. Sydney. 6/12/2008

To soothe the depressing departure from South America today, I bought tickets for Luciano's debut appearance in Sydney on Saturday 6th of December.

Promoter's note:
"Luciano will play the Pulse Radio year-end party (featuring a Funktion-One soundsystem!), an epic day-time summer journey on Saturday 06 December at a yet-to-be-disclosed venue that will undoubtedly rise and fall like the tide of Sydney harbour."

Boat party has to be a decent bet for the location.

First release tickets for this strictly limited capacity event went on sale at Resident Advisor on Monday 08 September and are priced at $60 + BF.

Full details on the remaining line-up and venue will be announced shortly.

Presented by Finely Tuned and Resident Advisor.

John Selway @ Club La Feria, Santiago, Chile. 5/09/2008

New York's John Selway is once again moving to the fore in the electronic music scene. He garnered much acclaim for his highly successful collaborations with Christian Smith, the duo released their album The Coming Storm on Sino records with the single 'Transit Time' getting a lot of playtime with the bigger names in techno. The past few months have seen releases on Dubfire's Sci+Tech, Adam Beyer's Drumcode and Steve Lawer's Viva Music.

I was delighted to discover this listing on arriving in Chile. I was, once again, treated to high quality techno in an intimate South American venue. Can life get much better? Club La Feria is located in what appears to be a residential area in Barrio Bellavista in Santiago's Centro. It is only when you walk in through the front gate that the hum of a bass drum becomes audible. The club itself is spread over two levels with the obligatory balcony looking over the dance floor. It has played host to many big names in the past such as Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos and Luciano. The latter two having strong ties to Chile and, therefore, I can imagine they were particularly raucous affairs.

John Selway arrived on stage at about 2.30am and played a very enjoyable and tough techno set until closing time at 5.30am(Irish legislators take note). DJing using Serato Scratch he gave all in attendance a proper exhibition of the more traditional/industrial side of techno. Think Drumcode and Intec. I am beginning to sense a huge resurgence in this side of things. That is absolutely fine with me. The crowd in attendance where, as always, friendly to, and inquisitive as to who, the stranger in their midst was. It was a great way to start my last weekend in South America.

John Selway is currently touring heavily around the world so I would expect him to make a visit to Irish shores in the foreseeable future. His latest remixes are available to sample on his MySpace page listed below.

Interpol - 'Specialist'

When I first started listening to Interpol I could not get enough of this. I only had a few of their tracks at the time and I only discovered later, after quickly becoming addicted to the New York quartet, that it was not included on an album. It was the closing track on their early Interpol EP which also contained versions of 'NYC' and 'PDA', both subsequently featuring on Turn On The Bright Lights. The fact that it has not been included on an album release gives this hidden gem an extra special flavour.

Ewan Pearson Speaks

Ewan Pearson has been writing short pieces for Germany's Groove magazine for the past couple of months. The brief was that it shouldn't be about records or the lifestyle of a DJ but more thoughtful or insightful. He has made some very interesting points and observations in his bi-monthly guest column to date. Covering topics from MP3 blogging to ears and general observations about the electronic music scene. His June 2008 piece has a particular resonance for me as it covers the notion of travelling in another country without a command of the native language. It's something I've been struggling with, but slowly managing over the past three months. I have really enjoyed the insights and opinions of one the scenes leading lights. I'm sure you will find something that strikes a cord with you too.

Ewan has posted his bi-monthly guest columns here. Check it out.

What the f**k is going on in: Alaska, USA

As controversy after controversy surrounding John McCain's appointment of Sarah Palin as his running mate appear from the woodworks, this video has appeared on Youtube of Palin addressing members of the Alaska Independence Party before their convention this year. She seems to be a keen admirer of the party, which wants Alaska to break away from the US due to their belief that the referendum which made Alaska a state of the US in 1958 was rigged. Given that the McCain campaign's slogan is "Nation first" and the AIP's is "Alaska first", this is bound to compound the embarrassment that the appointment of this hardline conservative has caused the McCain campaign. Hopefully next it will be revealed that the father of Palin's children is a black, Muslim, gay, environmentally-friendly, Communist, Anarchist suicide bomber.

DEAF 2008

Despite being supposedly on holidays Ed has managed to write the last million posts, and for this we apologise to and salute him. Now that things are back to something resembling normality until Thursday I feel obliged to look forward to one of the few real highlights of the Dublin Autumn/Winter - the Dublin Electronic Arts Festival. In its 7th year now, DEAF has brought the finest in experimental and electronic art and music to Dublin on a yearly basis, for, em the last 7 years. Returning to slightly more "conventional" waters after last year's more than successful Asian-themed event, the festival has a dream line-up in store this year. Highlights of the festival include:
- a night with M83 and Channel One, (a band that this blog has been tipping for greatness for roughly eighteen years now) in Andrew's Lane on Friday 24th October.
-‘Cycles’ : live outdoor art + projected video exhibition presented by Synth Eastwood in Meeting House Square (outdoor screen) on 6-11pm, Fri 24th & Sat 25th
- Chymera supported by John Daly in Button Factory Fri 24th
- A full day of talks from experts in the area on Saturday 25th in the Auditorium, Digital Exchange, The Digital Hub, Crane St, Dublin 8
- Luke Vibert, one of the absolute godfathers of acid house and techno, in Kennedy's on SAt 24th. This is a must-see. Here is Clikilk, a true classic.
- Donal Dineen (Irl) and 3Epkano (Irl) live - visual & music presentationNational Gallery of Ireland - The Shaw Room, Merrion Square West and Clare Street, Dublin 2, 3.00pm. I don't think we need to explain why we'll be attending this one....
- The MOTHER of all closing parties. Model 500 (feat. Juan Atkins and Mike Banks live - USA), Laurent Garnier (Fr), Moritz Von Oswald Trio feat. Vladislav Delay (Fin), Max Loderbauer (Ger), Fuck Buttons (UK), Point B (UK),Chef (UK), Americhord (Irl), Annie Hall (D1 Esp), Chequerboard (Irl),Rollers/Sparkers (Irl), Legion of Two (Irl), !Kaboogie and D1 Recordings DJ’s + more tbc. Visuals by Mercuryboy + Metaldragon
Village, Whelans and Whelans Upstairs, Wexford Street, Dublin 2, 7.30pm sharp to 3.00am

- This closing party promises to be something special. Juan Atkins and Mike Banks are pioneers of the whole idea of techno music. They were at the heart of the early techno movement in 1980's Detroit along with such names as Kevin Saunderson and Derek May. To see them in action will be a pleasure and an honour. Laurent Garnier is another name that most people will be familiar with, and another man to whom a lot of credit for the rise of techno must go. He has also produced some of the finest tracks ever made, including one that will never ever leave my list of favourite tracks, the Sound of the Big Babou. This line-up is one of the most prestigious to ever come to Dublin,. The access-all areas aspect in Whelan's and the Village, and the fact that it is a bank holiday weekend should make for an incredible night.
